Young Women's Clinic

Too Young for a Mammogram -- Not Too Young for Breast Cancer
For years, national recommendations have suggested women begin mammography screening at age 40. Breast cancer is most often diagnosed in women over 50.

However, at The Rose, we are concerned with the number of women we are diagnosing under 50. In fact, for the past five years we have diagnosed as many, if not more, women who are under the age of 50.

This trend was one of the reasons we opened the Young Women's Clinic in April 2005.

Our concerns proved valid.

Between opening day on April 15, 2005 and March 31, 2006 The Rose has seen 930 clients in the Young Women's Clinic. Of these 930 young women (age 34 and under), 8 have been diagnosed positive for breast cancer. This translates to 1 in 116 clients seen at the Young Women’s Clinic being diagnosed with breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society’s Surveillance Research, 2005, the probability for developing invasive cancer (breast) for females age birth to 39 is 1 in 207. Compare this to 1 in 116 and the need for the Young Women’s Clinic is apparent.

Another reason for dedicating a service exclusively for women under 35 is because denser breast tissue in younger women makes it more difficult to diagnose breast cancer using mammography alone. Therefore the diagnostic process must be different and requires combining tests with physical exams.

On a typical day at the Young Women's Clinic, patients range in age from 19 to 34. Some have a breast exam only, some have ultrasound only and some have a combination of mammogram and ultrasound. All patients at the Young Women's Clinic have the advantage of being seen by Dr. Dixie Melillo and Dr. Janet Hoagland.

In addition to receiving a clinical breast exam by a physician, each woman is taught how to do a self breast exam by an experienced technologist.

"We want women to leave reassured with a better understanding of their bodies," said Amy Rigsby, Technical Director. "Too often a woman has worried about an area in her breast but being 'too young for a mammogram' didn't know where to turn. Our Young Women's Clinic is designed to address her fears. We spend a lot of time talking with her and listening to her concerns. That dialogue is one of the real differences in our Clinic."

The Young Women's Clinic is available at the Joan Gordon Center on Wednesdays and Fridays and The Rose Medical Plaza on Fridays. For more information, call Brahana Howard at (281) 464-5116.
